Rent a car for the full week (pick up/drop off at Faro Airport). It costs more than trains but unlocks Sagres, Monchique, and flexibility for beach-hopping — the highlights of this plan depend on it.

Faro

Curated Itinerary

1

Day 1: Arrive and settle into Algarve

Land, pick up car, drive to Lagos (~1h15). Check in, then explore Lagos old town: cobbled streets, Praça Gil Eanes, the old slave market museum (Mercado de Escravos, a sobering but important historical site), and the marina. Sunset walk/drink overlooking Ponta da Piedade rock formations. Dinner in the old town.

Lisbon airport car rental

Given the 7-day Algarve plan starts in Lagos, it's worth considering flying into Lisbon, driving the coastal route with an overnight stop in Comporta or Vila Nova de Milfontes, then arriving in Lagos the next day — effectively an 8-day trip with a strong bonus destination. This is a nicer entry than flying direct into Faro if one has an extra day to spare and to see the Alentejo coast, which is quieter and wilder than the Algarve itself. If sticking strictly to 7 days, flying into Faro and renting the car there (as in the original plan) is more efficient — driving from Lisbon eats into your Algarve time without adding it back unless you stop overnight.
2

Day 2: Sagres and the Far West

Drive to Cabo de São Vicente (mainland Europe's southwesternmost point — dramatic, windswept, great lighthouse) and Sagres Fortress. Lunch in Sagres village. Afternoon at Praia do Amado (surf beach) or a quieter walk along the Fisherman's Trail (Rota Vicentina) section near Carrapateira. This coast is wild Atlantic, not calm swimming water — come for scenery and surf culture, not sunbathing.

3

Day 3: Sea Caves & Beaches

Morning: Benagil boat tour from Lagos or Portimão marina (kayak or small motorboat) to see Benagil Cave, Ponta da Piedade's arches/grottoes, and hidden coves — a genuine highlight and much better by boat than land. Afternoon: beach time at Praia Dona Ana or Praia do Camilo (short walk down wooden staircases). Optional: sunset kayak or paddleboard session if the weather cooperates.

4

Day 4: Inland Algarve: Silves & Monchique

Morning in Silves — the red sandstone Moorish castle and old town, once the region's Moorish capital. Drive up into the Monchique hills for lunch (try piri-piri chicken or the local medronho spirit), visit Fóia (Algarve's highest point, big views) and the spa village of Caldas de Monchique. Spring is the best time for this drive — hills are green and wildflowers are out.

5

Day 5: Lagos → Tavira, via Faro

Check out, drive east (~1h30–2h with a stop). Optional detour through Faro's old town (walled Cidade Velha, cathedral, storks nesting on rooftops) for an hour or two. Continue to Tavira, check in, evening stroll over the Roman/medieval bridge and along the Gilão river, dinner in the old town

6

Day 6: Ria Formosa & Islands

Tavira sits on the edge of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a lagoon system of islands and salt marshes. Take a boat tour to Ilha de Tavira or Ilha Deserta (near Faro) — beautiful, uncrowded barrier-island beaches, good birdwatching in spring (flamingos sometimes present). Afternoon free for the beach or a bike ride along the estuary

7

Day 7: Olhão Market & Departure

Morning trip to Olhão, known for its lively fish/produce market and less touristy, working-town character — good for a final coffee and souvenir shopping. Return car, fly out of Faro.
